Director of Finance/Controller

The Director of Finance/Controller is a key member of executive management and the Finance Department. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, oversight and management of the accounting department staff, preparation of periodic financial reports, annual budget planning, maintaining accounting records, internal controls, and compliance with regulatory requirements.

The Director of Finance/Controllerwill also provide the Board of Directors, Finance Committee and senior management staff regular financial updates and information necessary for decision-making, financial integrity and operational effectiveness of the organization.


  • Responsible for the organization-wide fiscal management and general oversight of the account department staff, including purchasing, accounts payable, payroll, accounts receivable, billing staff, preparations, and analysis of financial statements for internal and external reporting.

  • Oversee the monthly and annual closing process. Ensure reconciliations and analysis are completed, including but not limited to: 

            - Balance sheet, revenue, and expense account reconciliations

            - Grant and revenue management

            - Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner

            - Ensure that accounts receivable are collected in a timely manner

            - Ensure that required debt and lease payments are made on a timely basis

            - Maintain the chart of accounts and maintain an orderly electronic accounting and compliance document retention                      system.

  • Provider leadership and management of the daily operations to the Finance Department, including overall supervision of the accounting department staff.

  • Collaborate with department heads in preparations and development of budgetary information for Federal and Funding Agencies, preparation, review, and timely submission of FFR reports for funding agencies, analysis and request for grant drawdowns, and management of grants closeout.

  • Develops and maintains internal controls, financial systems, and procedures to support effective program implementation and audits.

  • Ensure timely preparation and submission of internal and external financial and tax reporting; which includes, but is not limited to; payroll taxes, IRS Form 990 and 1099, Medicaid and Medicare reports, and any other required regulatory reports.

  • Develop, recommend, and implement accounting and operational policies, procedures and processes that assure organized, efficient, and compliant management systems.

  • Coordinates year-end financial closing and annual audits, and prepares or reviews all audit schedules.

  • Perform other administrative duties as might be required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting required, MBA and/or CPA strongly preferred.

  • 5-7 years of senior management position. Preferably experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting.

  • Current, relevant, and substantial knowledge of billing matters related to health center revenue sources and third-party payors required.

  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
